What Is That To You?

Social media is useful for many things, but contentment is not one of them. at least not for me. even when my goals are good, I can become discouraged by continual reminders that others are accomplishing them first or with greater results. I am prone to this kind of discouragement, so I frequently remind myself that God has given me everything I need to accomplish the work He wants me to do.

This means I don't need a bigger budget or assurance of success. I don't need a better work environment or a different job. I don't need a bigger house, better car or the approval or permission of others. I don't need good health, or more time. God may give me some of those things, but everything I need I already have, for when He assigns work He provides the resources. My only assignment is to use whatever time and talents He has given in a way that blesses others and gives God the glory.

Jesus and Peter had a conversation that got around to this subject. After making breakfast on the shore of Galilee, Jesus told Peter what would happen at the end of his life, Pointing at another disciple, Peter asked, "What about him?" Jesus responded, "What is that to you?"

That is the question I need to ask myself when I compare myself to others. the answer is, "None of my business." My business is to follow Jesus ad to be faithful to his purpose and plan for me.

Where is Your Focus

Most people struggle with insecurity. While some struggle more than others, there has probably been at least one time in your life where you felt like you didn't measure up, you weren't good enough, or didn't have what it takes. Maybe you've felt that in your job, in your school, with your parents, in your marriage, or with your own children. Our insecurities stem from the fact that so many of us are focused on outward things and the way others approve or disprove of us. Beginning today, you are going to learn to have an altar ego by acknowledging this one simple truth: without Christ, there is something wrong with you. If you are not inwardly focused on Christ and instead more focused on how others perceive you, then you will continue to struggle with your insecurity. Where is your focus? What insecurities do you struggle with most?

Spiritual Health: Meditating on God’s Word This is a 7 part series - Part 5

Studying scripture is fundamental to our spiritual health. The Bible is God’s Word and His instructions to us. The Holy Spirit illuminates scripture for us. In scripture, we are taught about God’s character and reminded of God’s faithfulness in the past. We are instructed on how to live holy lives of love, and we are convicted of our shortcomings.
I have personally struggled with consistent Bible study. My life seems to get too busy, and I honestly sometimes just blow it off because I’m running around “doing things for God.” And during the seasons when I am lazy and neglect time in God’s Word, I realize how simple it is to justify sin in my life. I lose focus on truth.
During the times when we faithfully meditate on God’s Word, it’s amazing how scripture overflows from our minds and is applied constantly throughout our day.
We’re always meditating on something, whether it is scripture, a blog, or a conversation we’re mulling over. The key is to shift our focus to scripture and truth as we go about our day. Try keeping God’s Word on your mind for a day and watch how your perspective changes.
What are three scriptures you can meditate on today, or this week? What do you expect God to do when you turn your focus to Him during your day?

Choosing Right - This is a 7 part series - Part 2

As human beings, disobedience is something that comes natural to us. When we were children, no one had to teach us how to break the rules. Something inside of us tells us to go when someone tells us to stop.

Today we begin to take a holistic look at disobedience. There is a desire in all of us to rebel when people in authority tell us what to do. God’s Word tells us that those that truly know Christ do what He says to do. It also says that those who continually disobey Him are not truly followers.

So we must discover how to overcome the side of us that wants to go against the guidelines that have been given to us. Our lives are filled with opportunities to make right and wrong decisions. When we choose to be disobedient, we are making a decision that goes much deeper than we could ever realize.

Today’s Challenge: Make sure you focus less on what you cannot do and more on who God is. We all have sinned. We all have a sinful nature. The truth is sin and disobedience can seem natural, so the more you focus on what you can’t do, the harder it can become to do the right thing. The example used is, “Don’t think about a pink elephant.” What came to your mind? More than likely, you pictured a pink elephant.

Today, chase after God. Read more, discuss more, and fill your thoughts with Him. The more you do, the more natural obedience will become.
